Charting New Horizons: Lim Le Ying’s Inspirational Path to Legal Excellence

Introduction
Lim Le Ying is a Han Chiang High School student who graduated in 2019, revisited Han Chiang High School on 17th July 2024 to observe the place that paved her way to success. She achieved an outstanding 10A*s in her IGCSE examinations and proceeded to DISTED College Penang, where she pursued her A-Level course, eventually graduating with 4A*s. Her journey didn’t stop there, as she immediately left Malaysia to pursue her law degree at Queen Mary University in London.
Given the rare opportunity, an interview was held with Le Ying for her to share her experiences about her time in the UK and how it impacted her life until now. Furthermore, she shared her thoughts on why she decided to pursue a law degree, stating that legal form appealed to her, as she enjoys fast-paced work. She was also keen on learning about the impact of the legal industry on real estate and businesses, all while making a big difference.
Achievements
Le Ying is set to graduate from the Queen Mary University of London with a degree in Law, earning first-class honours, the Principal’s Award, and the Company Law Prize. In 2023, during her second year of university, Le Ying signed a training contract for employment in London starting in 2025 with Taylor Wessing LLP, a renowned international law firm with offices worldwide. Furthermore, she also had the opportunity to pursue an LLM in Legal Practice (Solicitors Qualifying Exam) at The University of Law, the largest law school in the UK.
Graduating with First Class Honors is undeniably impressive as it is only awarded to students who achieve 70% or higher in their examinations. Not only did Le Ying graduate with First Class Honors, but she also achieved the highest available class honours at Queen Mary University, demonstrating her exceptional academic prowess. During her interview, she expressed her contentment as her hard work and determination had paid off as her dream came true.
Plans and improvements
Apart from that, Le Ying has big things planned for her future. She plans to qualify for one of the corporate departments of Taylor Wessing after completing her training, as she wants to make a difference by providing her clients with a one-stop shop for all their issues and concerns. Additionally, she wishes to offer innovative solutions to her clients by coming up with comprehensive and all-encompassing legal advice. However, Le Ying still wishes to improve her commercial awareness by understanding what is happening within and outside of the legal industry to improve her clients’ experience, since it can be specifically catered to their needs. Besides, she also shared her encounters with the biggest academic challenge she has ever faced – writing techniques, as she took a lengthy amount of time to understand the prompts and questions given. Nevertheless, with the help of her lecturers, Le Ying eventually overcame them by trying out all sorts of writing styles.
Advice and Gratitude
In offering advice to aspiring law students, she urged them to have the courage to learn and step out of their comfort zone more often. By pushing themselves beyond their boundaries, she believes that students can gain perspectives and experiences that provide them with potential opportunities that will eventually shape their future. Moreover, she advises students to work hard and never give up as it will pay off. Lastly, Le Ying expressed her immense gratitude to all the teachers and friends who provided never-ending support during her short 5 years at Han Chiang High School.
