New Norm 2021 Orientation Day
An Unprecedented Means of Introducing Freshmen to Han Chiang High School
On the 16th of January (Saturday), Han Chiang High School hosted its first-ever online orientation day in the form of a webinar on the Zoom platform. In view of the Movement Control Order (MCO) 2.0 imposed by the government from the 13th of January to 26th of January on several states – Penang included –, the face-to-face Orientation Day has been obliged to be cancelled, thus resulting in the shift of the conventional event to an unorthodox one online that was equally as efficient and purposeful, if not better. The event was held in two different languages: the Chinese session, which commenced at 8:30 a.m. and ended at 10:00 a.m., as well as the English session that was from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The presence of every new intake, including transfer students, was required as not only must they be well-informed about the school’s administration and operation, but they could also familiarise themselves with the Zoom platform where the online classes will be taking place once the school reopens on the 20th of January.
Firstly, Madam Kung Bee Lee, principal of Han Chiang High School, expressed her warm welcome and gratitude towards the 400 freshmen and their parents for attending the event. Following the recent unforeseen pandemic outbreak, Madam Kung believed that every individual has to change and adapt to the current situation and learn to alter our lifestyles according to the new norm. This also includes communication and education, which have to be carried out online. “For all the students present today, you’ve done well throughout the course of online learning that you had to undergo. I would also like to say the same to the parents; I believe that you have been standing by the side of your children through the whole process, accompanying and encouraging them, as well as the fact that you are here today joining the orientation day with your children. You are all extremely laudable parents!”
Madam Kung also thanked the parents for believing so strongly in the education Han Chiang has to offer. “Since the 400 of you have already been admitted to study in Han Chiang High School, I hope that you will make the best out of it and grasp every opportunity to elevate yourselves in every aspect possible.” She pronounced the school’s philosophy as “quality education nurtures quality students” and assured everyone that the faculty of Han Chiang High School is more than willing to exercise their unique pedagogical methods to provide the best education for the students.
Next, Madam Kung gave a detailed introduction on the courses provided by Han Chiang High School, which are the UEC Chinese course, UEC English course and IGCSE course. Madam Kung stated that each student taking the IGCSE course is required to study the three main languages: Chinese, English and Malay as first languages to ensure that they have the utmost capabilities in these languages because as they step out into the ever-changing society in this contemporary era, the ability to converse in multiple languages will prove a jutting advantage in the competitive international workplace. She encouraged parents to not only communicate with their children in a single language or their mother tongues but rather try speaking in multiple languages to help their children absorb learning materials faster by improving their listening skills. “This will be close cooperation between you parents and the school in striving for the best for the children. Being fluent in these three languages is our responsibility, as we can live in harmony, communicate and work together with people of different races and ethnicities.”
Moreover, the courses also provide art lessons, PE lessons, moral education as well as Sejarah lessons. These classes are equally significant as Han Chiang aims to provide a comprehensive education that stresses on each element without partiality in order to prepare students fully before they enter the society. The school also focuses greatly on co-curriculum which is carried out after schooling hours. “If your children have certain talents that have been nurtured since young, I encourage them to take part in related extra-curricular activities to further enhance and hone their skills.” Madam Kung also highly encourages students to take part in various competitions like debate competitions, elocution competitions and many more to broaden their horizons and increase their knowledge.
With the evolution and demand of our technological age, Han Chiang High School has become one of the first schools in Penang to insinuate STEAM education into students’ curriculum since 2017. Besides being able to gain basic computational knowledge, students can also expect to learn some programming skills as they slowly advance in the planned course.
Lastly, Madam Kung urged students to maintain the right learning attitude as they attend online classes starting from the 20th of January. “The difference between primary and secondary school is that you won’t be spoon-fed anymore. Self-discipline and self-motivation are the key elements that are needed in every student to achieve success.”
After her speech, the dean of studies, Mr Lim Seong Gim, dean of discipline, Mr P’ng Yik Thon and dean of the co-curriculum department, Ms Poh Sok Boey gave their speeches on their respective departments to familiarise the freshmen with our school.
To sum up, hope that the 2021 new intake can have an unforgettable experience studying at Han Chiang High School and wish them a happy learning journey!
